The Foo King

Dave Grohl is a rock star! I must have said it a hundred times at the show. He’s not just in a rock band, not just a guitarist and not just a singer. He’s a bonafide 100% arena rock-freakin-star and I love him. His band the Foo Fighters played Blue Cross Arena on Monday night. There were plenty of empty seats and if you missed the show and consider yourself a fan of rock music, then shame on you. Last night my faith was restored in music as I learned that grunge ain’t dead just yet, baby!

Um Jackson, this is WBEE, you know, the country station. Why are you writing about a rock band?

Don’t get me wrong I still love my country. But like in life and in relationships, you are allowed to experience love more than once. My first love was/is/will always be grunge. As a teen I liked different types of music but in September of 1991 my life changed forever by hearing one record, ‘Nevermind’ by Nirvana. Never, and I mean never, had I ever been so blown away by a first listen. I demanded my friend play it again immediately after it finished and I haven’t stopped playing it yet. To this day I worship Kurt Cobain, Kris Novoselic, and Dave Grohl of Nirvana. Last night I finally saw one of my heroes live.

grohl-bca.JPGAfter Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain’s suicide murder in1994, drummer Dave Grohl started his own band. Who would’ve thought a guy could so successfully step out from behind the kit. Foo Fighters are everything rock should be; loud, dirty, arrogant, drunk, and fun. Dave owns the stage like the king of 70s arena rock without traveling too deep into the forest of cliche. (see: Bon Jovi) From the flip of the long hair to slinging of his axe, nobody has better stage presence in rock today than him. Look at the pic. That is grunge.

BTW, the amazing photo courtesy of my friend Frank DeBlase of City Newspaper and host of the 2nd best show on radio(right after the BMCC), The Sunday Night Shakedown.

Well look who’s going crazy now
Were face to face my friend

I don’t ever leave my house to do anything social except cross the street to drink in my neighbor’s garage. Ask any of the few friends I got left. I’m burnt on concerts, been to way too many in my life. It would take something tremendous and monumental to get me off the couch and out of Ogden. On Monday Night at the BCA the Foo Fighters provided just that. Thanks, Dave.
