Spurr of the Moment Vol. 1

Today’s blog begins a semi-regular feature to be known as “Spurr of the Moment”. These are just some random tidbits I noticed upon exploring the web today.

Volume 1 Date: 6/5/08

*So I’m watching TBS the other day and noticed they’re trying to outwit the DVR players and the people who watch tv that way. Once you’ve experienced DVR you’ll never go back to watching tv the old fashioned way again. Since nobody is watching commercials much these days TBS decided to pull this move where they “pause” the show you’re watching and squeeze in a promo for other shows. Brilliant yet annoying. Check out a clip:

*The best new show of our abbreviated, cut in half fall TV season in my opinion was ‘Termintor: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’. Rarely does sci-fi do well in the ratings on network TV and rarely is the show produced well. This show is the exception. Discarding the movie ‘T3, this show picks up the Terminator storyline after the end of the film ‘T2′. Time travel occurs in the pilot episode and they find themselves in 2007. Go watch it if you were a fan of the original movie. See if itunes has it or whatnot. It produced in a cool sci-fi manner ala the original, not hokey and campy like ‘T2′. Anywho, word on the street is Fox has finally renewed it for the fall TV season. I glad they didn’t give up on the show.

*In other tv news, Sony has signed a deal with major cable TV operators in the U.S. that will allow for digital TVs that can receive cable programs without the need for a set-top box. Finally the end of the cable box. Now when I call the cable and ask for a tech can we please skip the bs step where you ask me to unplug and plug back in my cable box. Sorry Einstein, that doesn’t fix anything.

*What’s the deal with land line phones? People still have those? Apparently they do. In fact 51% of the world’s population still have them according to a report by the International Telecommunications Union. I know what you’re thinking, Wow, 49% of the world, nearly half of the people have cell phones. That’s amazing. Yeah, amazing half the people are still clinging to the past. In a digital world what purpose does a land line serve?

*Jessica Simpson might just become a country star. Seriously. Her song “Come On Over,” which was released to country radio last week and debuted at no. 41 on Billboard’s country singles charts, makes Simpson the highest charting debut solo artist in the history of Billboard’s country singles chart. She’s hot, she’s dumb, and she can sing. Somebody please remind me why I’m supposed to hate her.

*My favorite band in college was Nirvana. Sadly they weren’t around long but I’m very grateful for the music they gave us. Now comes word that Courtney Love, widow of singer Kurdt Cobain, has had his ashes stolen from her Los Angeles home. Every day that skank finds news ways to disrespect his memory. Unbelievable.

*The NBA Finals begin tonight. We kick it old school as the LA Lakers take on the Boston Celtics. The Lakers’ Kobe Bryant is simply amazing yet gets very little love from fans or the press. Everyone’s been waiting for the new Jordan. Open your eyes people, there he is. Did you see the video he put out recently with the crew from ‘Jackass’? Check it out:
